Skill Building Opportunities

At the bottom are documents regarding four skill-building opportunities for highly qualified teacher legislation, specifically the Co-Teaching/Collaboration Model. Two events are sponsored by the Iowa Department of Education, Learning Disabilities Association of Iowa is sponsoring an annual conference, and one is sponsored by AEA 13.
1) Creating a Collaborative School Culture

Creating a Collaborative School Culture Presented by Dr. Suzanne Robinson
October 9 & 10, 2006 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Creating a Collaborative School Culture is a two-day workshop designed for Middle School/High School specialeducation and general education teachers who work together meeting the demands of both NCLB and IDEA ’04 so that students successfully master the general education curriculum. Teachers and collaborative teams will gain knowledge of evidence-based curriculum strategies, co-teaching techniques, and effective accommodations and modification for students. The workshop will paint a picture of whatcollaboration looks like and how special and general educators work together to support students.

Suzanne Robinson, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Kansas.
Dr. Robinson’s scholarship has focused on collaboration in schools, and restructuring education support services. She is a frequent consultant on inclusive education and strategies for school districts, state agencies, and professional organizations around the country.
Registration is limited to 100 participants consisting of teams of general educators, special educators, AEA building representatives, and consultants. Administrators are also encouraged to attend with their district teams.

2) Highly Qualified and Beyond: A November 16 and 17 state conference open to teachers, administrators, AEA staff, and higher education faculty will provide skill building in Iowa’s consultative and co-teaching models, with an emphasis on secondary teachers. The conference, featuring Ron Rohac and Dr. Marilyn Friend, will be held at HyVee Hall in Des Moines and is limited to 800 participants. There is no registration fee. 3) Administrator's Retreat On Co-teaching: A repeat of the July 2006 administrators’ retreat on meeting the highly qualified teacher legislation through co-teaching will be offered November 16. The retreat, extremely well received by those administrators who attended in July, will be led by national co-teaching expert Marilyn Friend and will include problem-solving sessions on such areas as staff development needs, grading issues, scheduling issues, planning time, and other related administrative issues. The retreat will be held at Adventureland Inn, Altoona and is limited to 150 participants. There is no registration fee. See attachment entitled "Retreat Registration and Agenda."

4) Together We Can Learning Disabilities Association of Iowa (LDA-IA) 35TH Annual Conference October 22-24, 2006, Holiday Inn, Airport in Des Moines, Iowa
Featured speakers at the Learning Disabilities Association of Iowa 2006 conference include Marilyn Friend, presenting on co-teaching and collaboration, and Judy Wood, presenting on classroom accommodations and differentiated instruction.
