The PDLT recommendations were referenced through-out the meeting, but the April 24 notes have not been reviewed.

Review briefly in August

District Goals and SEEDS Goal

South Page: reading comp, math, MS & elem weaker than HS, no subgroup differences

Farragut: math: problem solving, reading: comprehension, elem=vocab, F/R lowest scores, teachers indicate wanting to reach these students, 6-11 greatest gap in F/R, FAY students outperform incoming students

Essex: elementary- continue with reading comprehension/ QAR; studying/ evaluating a comprehensive math program, HS – ‘summarizing’ (What Works); math

East Mills MS & K-4 NV Elem. (whole grade sharing) – blend of Malvern/NV at MS, reading comprehension followed closely by math (vocab, story problems), 3:1 male:female population, male/adolescent nonreader

East Mills HS will have PD at the building – will not participate in SEEDS

Stanton: Math at elementary is a need (Dennis McClain is new principal) We need more information about Stanton’s goals.

Concerns about transient students and Second Chance as possible intervention

AEA Math team met with Essex administrators– will work on math on non-SEEDS days, P-8,9-12

“The best way to work on math at the secondary is to work with the math teachers.” - Tera

SEEDS Goals for 2007-2008:

Elementary:

Improve reading vocabulary and reading comprehension student achievement & decrease the gender (males – F, NV), IEP/non-IEP , and F/R/non-F/R gaps

o        Deeper in comprehension (inferring, drawing conclusions, summarizing - possibly GIST) ways to teach the strategies for the needs of students

o        Best practice vocabulary instruction

o        Participants: Farragut 10 teachers, SP not participating, NV 6 teachers, Stanton?  16+

Improve efficiency and accuracy in math problem solving, concepts & estimation at K-8

o        Problem based instructional tasks

o        Ways to teach conceptual understanding

o        Participants: Essex 11 teachers K-7, South Page 1 teacher 6-8, Farragut 2 teachers 7-8 Total = 14

Secondary:

Improve reading comprehension student achievement & decrease the gender (males), IEP/non-IEP, and F/R and non-F/R gaps

o        Continue with the summarizing strategies (GIST, reciprocal teaching) and note taking

o        Comparing – continue to require Comparing lesson plans at least once each semester, link previous PD to current PD, brief review needed?

o        Include peer observation and collaboration

o        Embed differentiation – meeting the needs of each learner

o        Leadership team analyzes data that is collected by the principal; leaders are ‘supporters’ and not ‘enforcers’

o        Participants: EMMS? 18 teachers, SP 18 teachers 6-12, Essex 13 teachers 7-12, Farragut 14 teachers 7-12, Stanton? Total= 63+

Locally: QAR participants will do an awareness level session for secondary teachers concerning the basic question types and supporting strategies (the language and skills you use with students).  Don’t get stuck in simply the “labeling” of questions.

Actions:

Ron and Carma will make contacts with reading & math supervisors

Carma will contact Stanton
